Most of my paintings start with a basic premise, that when we are children, we have an incredible ability to survive almost anything. We do that through fantasy and by creating our own worlds where instead of losing or being powerless, we win, we're strong and in charge.
Those worlds we create are so powerful as to be magical and very real. Real enough to allow us to survive. Then we grow up and face difficult things over and over again.
Except somewhere along the way we forget how to survive, we forget how to use the magic we used to know how to use.
We forget how to overcome even the daily obstacles we face and many times adults learn to become destructive instead of creative. My work is about remembering who we really are.
Most of the paintings start with an idea and the story grows as I paint. Ann Harper |
